As the sole exhibition in Korea exclusively for Wine and Spirits, The Seoul International Wines and Spirits Expo (SWS EXPO)
brings many foreign participants and Korean importers together every year for a successful business event.
SWS EXPO is held by the leaders of Korean wine and spirits market ‘Korean Wines and Spirits Importers Association(KWSIA).
With members from top 10 spirit importers for a total of approximately 60 wine and spirits importers, these companies cover
approximately 90% of the distribution of spirits in Korea. Along with support of ‘Korean Wine Association and ‘Korean Sommelier
Association these groups work towards the progress of the wine and spirits market in Korea through various activities.
The exhibition of 2012 had participants from 13 countries with especially strong presence from France, Italy, United States, Australia, and South Africa hoping to enter the Korean market As much as 18,000 attended the event and amongst them were 1500 importers, distributors, sommelier, and related industry buyers for an exciting meeting of the wine and spirits businesses.
Korean Wine and Spirits market grew substantially till 2007, and hit a slump in 2008 as a result of world economic recession. However starting from 2010, the wine market made a positive turn for new opportunities in the industry with consistent upward growth.
Per capita wine consumption in Korea is approximately 1.5 liter; a much lower number compared to the following for soju and beer (soju: approximately 24 liters/ beer: approximately 80 liters) and also lower than Japan’s consumption of approximately 7.5 liters, However, with the fast growth of the Korean economy along with changes in Korean food culture, the Korean wine market shows consistent progress with annual growth of 10? 15%, and much potential for long term opportunities in the future market.
